This week’s Spicy Clip of the Week left us teary-eyed and hungry.
For its latest spot, British Airways told the real-life story of an East Indian mother and her son, Ratesh. Ratesh left Mumbai for New York when he was just 17 years old. Even though he was thriving in the Big Apple, Ratesh still longed for his favorite childhood meal.
After finding Ratesh, the airline promised to send his mother’s dish to New York. Instead they sent Ratesh to his mother’s kitchen.
There are many elements to this ad that appeal to us — the story, food imagery, emotional reunion — but what really made this an instant favorite was the line “It’s never been just about flying.” Within this five-minute story British Airways has expressed its commitment to connect people, and in turn the airline has reached those of us still pining for our mothers and a home-cooked meal.
