Why It’s Important to Have Your Office Address Consistent Online

Two months ago Spicy Spirit Marketing was hired to revamp a real estate broker’s website. The client had a specific vision, and his office was less than a 10-minute drive away from my desk. So we chose to discuss the website changes in person.

The first time I drove to his office, I typed his business name on Google Maps on my smartphone. To my surprise, his office was listed in another city. Fortunately I knew the correct address; otherwise I would have been very late.

It turned out the location listed on Google Maps was his old address. The client had moved nine months ago, but his team hadn’t updated his contact information outside of his website and social media channels.

This was a problem the client needed to fix right away. The most obvious reason was that his prospective customers could have been led to the wrong address, which could have led to some frustration. The last thing a business owner wants is a lost opportunity because his or her address is listed incorrectly online.

Another, and lesser-known, reason a client’s contact information needs to be updated throughout cyberspace is because Google values consistency on all online media. At Spicy Spirit, one of our main objectives is to increase visibility to your website. And we can increase visibility by making your website rank higher in Google Place results.

When we take on a client, one of the first things we do is make sure his or her address is consistent on all websites, including social media and online directories. If an old company address is listed incorrectly on, say, a local business directory, that is going to affect the company website’s Google Place ranking. We want our clients’ websites listed on the top of the first page of Google Place results, because once they slip to the second page, the click-through rate slips dramatically.

Search results for “Pet Store San Mateo CA.” Having the current address and contact information listed across all websites and social media affects these businesses’ Google Place ranking.

Since Google Maps is owned by Google, the most utilized search engine in the world, it’s important to make sure your address and contact information is up-to-date. But don’t assume updating your address is as simple as using Google itself. You’ll need someone who knows what she’s doing.

Spicy Spirit has worked with the Google support team to make sure our clients’ information is current. We know which online forms to fill out and who to call. The whole process is old hat to us, and we’d love to work with you and make sure you’re as accessible online as you are off-line.
